The LIncoln monument is 107 acres (45 hectares), in Potomac Park, Washington, D.C.; and built 1914-17. The building, designed by Henry Bacon and styled after a Greek temple, has 36 Doric columns representing the states of the Union at the time of Lincoln's death. Inside the building is a heroic statue of Lincoln by Daniel Chester French and two murals by Jules Guerin.

The Lincoln Memorial is one of the most profound symbols of American Democracy in the world. It is a memorial that celebrates the tremendous accomplishments which have united the nation for more than two hundred years. In addition, it is a place where citizens assemble to draw attention to those causes and issues which continue to divide the country.
